algunas de ellas incluso de mi mano.

La vida en esta ciudad me ha parecido absurda.

Cuando he llegado a casa

he cerrado a cal y canto puertas y ventanas.

No quería respirar el mismo aire

FEEL LIKE DOING NOTHING

Today I feel like doing nothing.

On my rear-view mirror, I saw

three blue-collar workers spitting on a beggar

who swept through the traffic for some spare change.

Then I watched those uneducated brutes

as they moved on laughing, proud of their exploit.

They were undoubtedly a product of our academic failure.

I wished them a thousand painful deaths,

some of them by my hand.

Life in this city felt suddenly absurd.

When I got home,

I shut the doors and windows firmly.

I didn’t want to breath the same air

as such exquisite motherfuckers.

I used to receive very funny emails. They were sent by anonymous genius from my generation who vindicated our childhood’s myths with wit and charm. This happened more than five years ago and now I don’t receive anything like it. Maybe nostalgia is not so funny anymore.
It is not funny now that life has bolted and given its reins to those who, a very little while ago, we called brats.
It is not funny now that we see them fighting those battles we once lost.
It is not funny now to see how life goes on and expels us from the locomotive to the caboose.

LA FURGONETA

La lluvia sorprendió a Armatage Shanks y Kimberly Clark de vuelta a casa, atravesando La Mancha y sus verdes praderas tras una primavera pródiga en precipitaciones. Caía la lluvia como un siniestro baile de perdigones y se había formado en la carretera una lámina de agua de dos dedos que hervía con violencia. Dios señalaba con uñas de luz puntos escogidos al azar del horizonte infinito y la furgoneta cargada de muebles los perseguía despacio. Más allá de Honrubia había una línea de azules claros, como si el mapa del cielo se hubiera dividido en dos países enfrentados. Al poco de girar hacia Valencia, el sol del Mediterráneo, aunque aún muy lejano, los saludó con el brillo de las vidas apenas comenzadas.

THE VAN

The rain caught Armatage Shanks and Kimberly Clark on their way back home, when they were crossing La Mancha’s green meadows after the rainy spring. The rain was pouring down like an awkward dance of pellets and there was a sheet of water boiling with violence on the highway. With nails of light, God was pointing randomly chosen spots in the infinite horizon and the van, loaded with furniture, pursued them slowly. There was a line of light blues beyond Honrubia, as if the sky map had been divided into two opposite countries. Shortly after they headed towards Valencia, the Mediterranean sun, although already far away, greeted them with the shine of the lives that have barely started.

That grey-haired rat

was lying with its guts out by the sidewalk.

I picked it up by its tail

to scare the girls from my quarter

and my mom rewarded my exploit

with a well-deserved slap.

That rat’s guts colours

were those of the flag.

The rat had died

in the street where the village died

and I, half of my face red,

went away to cry while the sun set behind the prickly pears.

In the darken, bare room

Olga and Laura swallow raw the fishes

that they bought some minutes before at Monday’s street market

and both laugh when their fins tickle their empty stomachs

trying, once again in vain, to trick my organism

and to block my mind even more

from the sounds of routine coming from the street.

Olga and Laura laugh, still far from the abyss’ belly,

and I close my eyes, saying to myself that tomorrow, which is today already, is another day.

It’s been long since I don’t feel that impulse that drove me to offer myself to the world like an open flower on the palm of a hand, to look at life with my own other eyes, to soak my heart in stoups, to rummage in search of the cats’ fifth paw.
But today I put these four words together.

Hay en la parte alta de Gran Vía, casi en la frontera con Alcalá, una pensión cochambrosa con habitaciones interiores a las que la puta más arrastrada de Montera sube a sus clientes. En sus paredes amarillentas y techo descascarillado fija ella una mirada perdida, mientras piensa que ojalá que el tipo al que ha enviado a asearse al bidé se haya duchado. Hace tiempo que sus encantos no convencen ya a los turistas y debe conformarse con trabajadores del turno de noche que llegan hasta ella impregnados del olor agrio del fracaso. Sueña con tener algún día una casa propia, está harta de estos moteles donde siempre se halla una de prestado. En el techo de su habitación pondría unas estrellas de pega, para dormirse recordando aquella última noche en su pueblo, antes de venirse a Madrid para perseguir su sueño de ser actriz.

UPPER GRAN VIA

On Gran Via’s upper side, almost bordering with Alcalá, there’s a filthy guest house with inner rooms where Montera St’s most miserable hooker brings her johns. Her gaze wanders on the yellowish walls and peeling ceiling and she hopes that the guy she just sent to wash in the bidet has had a shower before coming here. It’s been a long time since her charms seduced the tourists and now she has to be happy with night workers that come to her impregnated with the rotten scent of failure. She dreams of owning a house some day, she’s sick of these motels that always feel borrowed. She’d stick some fake stars on the ceiling of her room, so she’s fall sleep remembering that last night in her village, just before she came to Madrid following her dream of becoming an actress.

Hay un edificio en la parte baja de Gran Vía que hace chaflán con Plaza de España. Bajo la cúpula que lo corona recibe a sus clientes la meretriz más cara de la ciudad. Ha decorado la bóveda con estrellas de pega y por ese firmamento que brilla en la oscuridad pierde la mirada, mientras ejecutivos y magnates le cuentan historias de triunfos espurios, bravadas pecuniarias e intrigas bursátiles que ni a ella ni a nadie le interesan. Verborrean sus clientes con las cabezas apoyadas en sus senos y ella les acaricia las calvas mientras sueña con que llegue el verano para poder dormir al raso, quizá en un velero fondeado bajo un cielo de verdad, sola, escuchando el vals de las olas, un rumor que, a diferencia de las peroratas de sus clientes, la ayude a dormirse.

LOWER GRAN VIA

There’s a building on Gran Vía’s lower side, on the corner with Plaza de España. Under the dome that crowns it, the most expensive prostitute in town welcomes her guests. She’s decorated the vault with fake stars and her gaze wanders through that firmament which shines in the dark, while executives and tycoons tell her stories about spurious victories, pecuniary boasts and stock and exchange plots, which wouldn’t arouse her or anybody’s interests. Her guests speak with verbosity with their heads upon her breasts and she caresses their bald patches while wishing that the summer would come at last so she’d sleep out in the open, maybe on a sailing boat anchored under a real sky, alone, listening to the waves’ waltz, a murmur that, contrary to her guests’ long-winded speeches, would put her to sleep.

El arte, alejado de su contexto, suele adoptar la apariencia de una tremenda estupidez. Cuando se sitúan las obras en su contexto, sin embargo, cobran una gran importancia. Aquellos, por tanto, que aseguran que no entienden el arte contemporáneo, parecen ser personas incapaces de situar las cosas en su contexto. De lo cual es lógico deducir que tienen una tara, una deficiencia. Dado que son mayoría, y la democracia es la dictadura de las mayorías, ¿no estaremos acaso siendo mangoneados por un hatajo de deficientes? Por favor, respondan a esto en su debido contexto.

The art, out of its context, usually looks very much like nonsense. Nevertheless, when the works are placed in its context, they become very important. Therefore, those people who maintain that they cannot understand contemporary art seem to be people who are unable to place things in context. It’s just logical to infer, then, that they have a handicap, some kind of defect. Given that they’re the majority, and democracy is the majority’s dictatorship, aren’t we maybe being bossed about by a bunch of defective people? Please, answer this in its due context.

Recuerdo los amaneceres que incendiaban barbechos de óxido y azufre. Muchas noches los esperábamos ateridos bajo las estrellas al borde de una discoteca cuyas puertas daban a una era. Engañábamos al organismo con mezclas adulteradas que comprábamos a precio de oro a jóvenes muy flacos que bailaban junto a los altavoces.

Nuestras pequeñas dosis de abismo, materia de nuestros goces.

Recuerdo también el silencio de una noche de marzo con niebla. Cómo los sonidos se ahogaban en aquella sopa lechosa y espesa. El aparcamiento a cámara lenta, el latido lejano de la discoteca, el baile del humo en fuga, sorprendido por la mañana, sobre los arrozales.

Recuerdo todo esto ahora y me pregunto cómo es posible que nunca me sintiera más vivo que cuando, según reputados expertos, más muerto estuve.

NO REMORSE

I remember those dawns that used to set fallow lands of oxide and sulphur on fire. Many nights we waited for them, stiffed with cold under the stars, on the edge of a dance club whose doors faced a threshing floor. We tricked our organism with adulterated substances, which we bought at very high prices from skinny youngsters who used to dance next to the loudspeakers.

Our little doses of abysm, our pleasures’ matter.

I remember also the silence of a foggy March night. How the sounds drowned in that milky, thick soup. The parking lot in slow motion, the dance club’s distant beat, the fleeing smoke, caught by the morning, dancing above the rice fields.

I remember all this now and I wonder how can be that I never felt more alive than when, according to reputable experts, the deader I was.

En el horizonte de Arabia, era el mar plata y mercurio, y la intersección de agua y aire, una película velada que hería la mirada.
En la orilla india, la playa desierta, un sol ardiente. Tú y yo. Nosotros. (Tú y yo son dos personas; nosotros, dos en una). Desafiando la marea en busca de piedras peculiares y caracoles imposibles. Cada ola llegada desde el horizonte de Arabia nos lavaba de agonías y rencores. En las falsas lindes dictadas por la física, era el agua engañoso espejismo con destellos de sulfuro. En la orilla india, habitada tan sólo por nuestros cuerpos semidesnudos, nos resistíamos a creer que esta felicidad fuera también mentira.

ARABIA’S HORIZON

In Arabia’s horizon, the sea was silver and mercury, and the intersection between water and air was a fogged film that hurt our gaze.
On the Indian shore, the deserted beach, a burning sun. You and I. We. (You and I are two people; we are two in one). Challenging the tide, looking for odd stones and impossible winkles. Each wave coming from Arabia’s horizon washed off our anguishes and bitterness. In the false boundaries dictated by Physics, the water was a deceptive mirage with glints of sulphide. On the Indian shore, inhabited by our semi-naked bodies only, we were reluctant to believe that this happiness was also fake.

How fascinating corpses, those of young bodies!

How paradoxical it is that tragic, premature deaths usually guarantee immortality.

Una prestigiosa casa de subastas neoyorquina ofrece pujar por un manuscrito de Lorca repleto de vacas y símbolos.

Curiosamente, aparecen en él algunos fariseos.

Es un poema de cuando Lorca se perdió en Nueva York. Lorca se lo regaló a un amigo que jamás se lo devolvió.

La poesía es un regalo que no siempre se ofrece a las manos adecuadas.

El poema acabó en casa de otro poeta, qué alegría, qué alboroto. Sus herederos piden ahora por él indecentes cifras astronómicas.

Los artistas alumbran a los buitres que mañana se alimentarán de sus despojos.

VULTURES OF TOMORROW

A prestigious auction house from New York offers to bid for a manuscript by Lorca full of cows and symbols.

Funnily enough, there are some Pharisees in it.

The poem dates from the time when Lorca got lost in New York. Lorca gave it to a friend who never gave it back.

Poetry is a gift that is not always offered to appropriate hands.

The poem ended up in another poet’s house, how marvellous, what a binge. His heirs are asking now indecent, astronomical amounts of money for it.

Artists give birth to the vultures that tomorrow will feed on their remains.

Otra vez nos hemos puesto un poco ebrios y el alcohol ha desatado en nuestras lenguas los nudos del silencio cómplice y pactado con el que envolvemos aquello de lo que normalmente preferimos no hablar, elegimos no decir, nuestras armas más mortíferas, verdades con bala que esta noche nos hemos disparado sin pudor y a bocajarro. Recuerdo al acostarme esa pelea a garrotazos retratada por Goya.

No hay furia en esos ojos.

Sólo terror y vértigo.

These guys have come round again. Again we’ve served ourselves beer with appetizers, washed the meal down with some wine, finished off the move with liquor shots as dessert. Again we’ve got a little drunk and alcohol has loosened the knots of the collaborative, agreed silence which we use to cover those things that we’d rather not talk about, that we choose not to say, our deadliest weapons, wounding truths like bullets that tonight we’ve shot at point-blank range and without any embarrassment. When going to bed, I remember that fight with cudgels portrayed by Goya.

There’s no rage in those eyes.

Just fear and vertigo.

He soñado también con un amanecer en una ciudad de la que no hallaba la salida, con ordenadores olvidados en habitaciones de hoteles lusos, italianas que pierden los papeles por la cocaína y valencianos que trabajan como bombas de agua humana en la Nit del Foc. He soñado con campanas de plexiglás gigantes para escuchar lo que sucede en el piso de abajo y espiar los momentos de intimidad de los amantes. He soñado que soñaba un sueño erótico y he soñado que me despertaban y, sin embargo, seguía dormido.

SURREALIST MOMENT

Today I’ve dreamt of a labyrinth of nightclubs in the subsoil of a city that looked like Madrid. I went hastily through it, looking for a toilet where I could relieve myself. Then I was running across Gran Vía because I was going somewhere and I was late. Eventually, I didn’t make it. I’ve also dreamt of a sunrise on a city, which exit I was not able to find, of computers forgotten in Lusitanian hotels’ rooms, of cokehead Italian girls and guys from Valencia who work as human water bombs during the Nit del Foc. I’ve dreamt of huge Plexiglas bells made for listening what happens in the next floor down and for spying on the lovers’ private moments. I’ve dreamt I was having an erotic dream and I’ve dreamt of someone waking me up. Nevertheless, I was still asleep.

A ningún padre le gusta que sus hijos crezcan, tener hijos es invertir en una empresa a sabiendas de que acabarás perdiendo las acciones. Ser inmaduro no es más que un truco para retrasar el choque con la realidad y, en último término, evitarlo permanentemente. Los que fuimos niños inmaduros somos adultos insatisfechos, soñamos con un mundo a nuestro antojo, que la vida sea un guión que nosotros firmamos, como los de nuestras batallas de soldados en miniatura, cuyo destino compartimos a la postre, pues acabamos emboscados por nuestros testarudos e infantiles caprichos.

ARMATAGE SHANKS WAS AN IMMATURE CHILD

Armatage Shanks was an immature child. When he was 13 years-old he was still involved with his toy soldiers. His parents never seemed to worry about that. No father likes to see their children growing up; having kids is like investing in a company knowing that you will eventually lose all your shares. To be immature is nothing but a trick to delay the crash against reality and, ultimately, to constantly avoid it. We who were immature children are now dissatisfied adults, we dream of a world as we please, of life being a script signed by us, same as those of the battles of our toy soldiers, whose fate we eventually share, because we end up ambushed by our stubborn, childish whims.

¿Quién dijo que son tristes las playas del invierno? No, eso no es cierto, es un disparate. ¿Quién dijo que la lluvia sobre el mar es un pleonasmo? No, de eso nada, ni pensarlo. ¿Quién dijo que ensucian la playa los restos de un naufragio? No, nunca: invitan a pensar qué tempestad los trajo hasta aquí y qué historias se ahogaron con ellos. Lo que es triste, lo que cansa, lo que ensucia, son las mareas humanas del verano que entierran los tesoros que serán descubiertos en invierno: el rumor de las olas, el frío de la brisa en los oídos, el crujido de la arena mojada bajo los pies del que huyó de las sombrillas y camina ahora refugiado bajo un paraguas.

Who said that winter beaches are sad? No, that’s not true, that’s rubbish. Who said that the rain over the sea is a pleonasm? No, no way, not at all. Who said that a shipwreck’s remains get the beach dirty? No, never: they entice you to think what storm brought them here and what stories drowned with them. What is sad, what is tiring, what dirties, are the summer’s human tides that bury the treasures that will be found in the winter: the murmur of the waves, the feeling of cold breeze in your ears, the wet sand, crunching under the feet of the one who fled from the parasols and is walking now, sheltered under an umbrella.

Paseará del brazo de sus padres deformes, que ya habrán olvidado que es adoptiva y la verán como un triunfo de sus genéticas combinadas. Será entonces cuando se crucen con aquellos que los humillaban en el colegio y los miren sonriendo, con los ojos almibarados por el dulce elixir de la venganza.

There’s a little Chinese girl in the bar who’s fascinated with the fruit machines’ lights. She’s two hunchbacked parents’ adopted daughter. Someday, this little Chinese girl will be young and beautiful, tall and slim as a reed. She will then promenade by the arms of their deformed parents, who will have already forgotten that she’s adopted and will see her as a victory of their genetic combination. Then they will pass by those who used to humiliate them back in school and they will look at them smiling, their sugary eyes oozing the sweet elixir of vengeance.

It’s been raining the whole month, so to speak, and I admired the skill of the girls who smoked under their umbrellas.

It’s incredible, how these men with ties get angry! How they tick people off on their triband phones! Either in the late evening or in the early morning, they yell angrily about negative balances, non-paid accounts, delayed collections, any possible swindle and aborted transfers, while they look at themselves out of the corner of their eyes on expensive stores’ windows. I pass them by and I look at them in surprise: Don’t money and fulfilled ambitions lead to happiness? Well, it’s incredible, what a temper these men with ties have! How slimy are them in their secretaries’ presence, though!

Today I’ve come back to those places that memory’s set on deleting. Among the floor’s dirt I’ve picked up a dusty picture, eaten away by the woodworms of time and oblivion. We both were in it, frozen in a happy instant back in the days when the world was huge and fascinating to us, and life enraptured us with perfumes of mystery at every step. I miss those days like pages with nothing written and I long so much that it hurts for the frantic scribbles which we used to blot the night’s margins with. Nights whose happy ending we used to finish off at dawn, eating up the crumbs of those very bitter coloured joys.

It’s been a while since the sun rose for everybody.
Its rays drove the night’s haze and the morning mist away.
The noise from the street awakes one or two ghosts.
The air is a thick soup of trembling molecules that buzz around my ears like flies that resist dying.
Some hours before I was another person but I was still myself.
Now I am entirely myself again and there is no trace of the other person.
I’ve been urinating him all along this weird morning.
The cistern barely silences the voices that are insulting me, reproaching me and sowing hesitation in me.
Am I myself or am I that other person?
My ghosts are ghouls of their perverse cohabitation.

De Noruega recuerdo los largos y perezosos viajes de autobús hacia los fiordos, de la noche clara al día luminoso que empieza de madrugada, a través de un paisaje que la vista no se acaba. De Suecia recuerdo la nieve y el olor a goma quemada de los frenos del pendeltåg. En Finlandia no llegamos a estar ni 48 horas, muy poco tiempo para poder decir algo sensato. En København llovía mucho y desayunamos unos arenques extraños, fritos y rebozados y adobados después en una vinagreta dulce con cebolla picada. Sé que estoy en Escandinavia cuando huelo el aroma mixto de salchicha a la plancha y bollo de canela que impregna los quioscos de prensa.
En Islandia no he estado.

From Norway I remember the long, lazy bus trips to the fjords, from the clear night to the bright day that starts in the early morning, through a never ending landscape. From Sweden I remember the snow and the smell of scorched rubber coming from the pendeltåg’s brakes. In Finland we stayed hardly 48 hours, too less time to be able to say anything sensible. In København it rained a lot and we had some weird herrings for breakfast, they were fried in breadcrumbs and then seasoned with a vinaigrette and chopped onion. I know that I am in Scandinavia when I smell the mixed scent of roasted sausages and cinnamon buns that pervades the press kiosks.
I’ve never been to Iceland.

PUNTO DE FUGA

Se ha ocupado ya la vida de poner en fuga
ideas como que estaba yo por encima de mis instintos,
que para ser feliz sólo necesitaba una furga,
que yo era, a todas luces, distinto.
Ha puesto esta vida mía en fuga
mi pasión por los vicios clandestinos,
reservándome la tristeza blanca de esa beluga
que nada en un acuario dando vueltas, sin destino.
Y cuesta reconocer que fui yo y no otro
quien vendió sus alas sin regatear,
quien eligió trotar como un potro,
demasiado asustado para volar.

VANISHING POINT

The life has already dealt with putting to flight
ideas like: “I am above my instincts”,
like: “I just need a van to be happy”,
like: “I am, by any reckoning, different”.
This life of mine has put to flight
my passion for clandestine vices,
keeping for me the white sadness of that beluga whale
who swims aimlessly in circles in an aquarium.
And it is hard to admit that it was me and nobody else
the one who sold his wings without bargaining,
the one who chose to trot like a colt,
too scared to fly.

Abajo los términos medios y las medias tintas,
los paños calientes que nos dejan fríos.
Deroguemos esta dictadura de los tibios,
agitemos las aguas mansas,
llevemos nuestras vidas templadas al punto de ebullición,
derramémonos a borbotones.
Ardamos altivos hasta extinguirnos con el mayor de los sigilos, como velas que un niño apaga de un soplo el día de su cumpleaños.

DOWN WITH HAPPY MEDIUMS

Down with the happy mediums and half measures,
the half-hearted attempts that live us cold,
let’s bring this lukewarm people’s dictatorship down,

let’s bring our warm lives up to the boiling-point,
let’s spill ourselves bubbling.

El tiempo se agota y con él las posibilidades que una vez soñamos para nosotros mismos. Cada año que pasa me acerca al fracaso de mis expectativas. Veré todas mis metas arrojadas a mis pies, vencidas, abandonadas, cansadas de esperar mi llegada, que ya no se producirá. Ahora que puedo empezar a ver mis años dorados en el retrovisor de un convoy con destino a ninguna parte me atormenta la casi certeza de haber perdido fuelle.

En días así más valdría estar muerto de una vez por todas.

MOURNINGS AND SORROWS

Time’s running out, and with it the possibilities that once we dreamt for ourselves. With every passing year I am nearer and nearer to the failure of my expectations. I will see all my goals thrown at my feet, defeated, abandoned, tired of waiting my coming, which will never take place. Now that I can start seeing my golden years on the rear-view mirror of a train bound to nowhere, I feel tortured by the almost certainty that I’ve run out of steam.

In days like this one it would be better to be dead for good.

En la quietud del silencio encerrado,
en la soledad de los manuales de instrucciones,
oigo de nuevo esa voz que me llama,
aunque no por mi nombre.
Nunca por mi nombre.
Por las rendijas de la puerta del cuarto a oscuras
se cuela una luz de bombillas.
No me ofrece esperanza alguna, sino una amenaza:
que cuando encienda la luz
todo seguirá como antes.

AN UNCONSCIOUS POEM

In the the locked-in silence’s stillness
in the instruction manuals’ solitude,
I hear again that voice calling me,
but not calling my name.
It never calls my name.
Through the apertures of the darkened room’s door
a bulbs’ light sneaks in.
It doesn’t give me any hope, but a threat:
when I switch on the light
everything will be the same as before.

LA JACARANDA

Estaba yo sentado bajo una jacaranda, o quizá fuera un tilo, yo no entiendo de botánica, pero algo sé de juntar palabras y me gusta más jacaranda, como palabra.
La brisa atlántica que peinaba sus ramas había depositado a sus pies un tapiz de flores lilas. Sobre él me senté, hastiado de los desvaríos del deseo, exhausto de mis rabietas sin sentido, harto de culpar de mis taras a las jugarretas del destino.
Y pensé que cómo era posible que ocuparan mi mente pensamientos tan funestos mientras desmigajaba absorto una de aquellas flores lilas, sentado bajo aquel tilo que ojalá, de verdad que ojalá que fuera una jacaranda.

THE JACARANDA

I was sitting under a jacaranda, or maybe it was a lime tree, I don’t understand about botany, but I know something about putting words together and I like more jacaranda, as a word.
The Atlantic breeze that combed its branches had placed a tapestry of lilac flowers at its foot. I sat down on it, fed up with the ravings of desire, worn out by my pointless tantrums, tired of blaming the dirty tricks of fate for my blemishes.
And I thought how it could be possible that such mournful thoughts took up my mind while I, absorbed, crumbled one of those lilac flowers, sitting under that lime tree that I wish, I really, really wish were a jacaranda.

Lo cierto es que yo nunca hago nada.
Me entretiene mucho ver pasar la vida desde mi ventana.
Pero eso no es lo peor.
Lo peor es que, mientras tanto, pienso en las cosas que voy a hacer.
Pero lo peor no es eso.
Lo peor es que tampoco las haré.
Pero eso no es lo peor.
Lo peor es que ahora estoy convencido de que las voy a hacer.
Y mientras tanto
me entretiene mucho estar aquí sentado.
Soñando que hago cosas que ni en sueños haré.

THE WORST THING

The truth is that I never do anything.
I kept myself very amused by watching how life goes by from my window.
But that’s not the worst thing.
The worst thing is that, in the meantime, I keep thinking of the things I am going to do.
But the worst thing is not that.
The worst thing is I won’t either do them.
But that’s not the worst thing.
The worst thing is that now I am sure that I am going to do them.
And in the meantime
I kept myself very amused by sitting here.
Dreaming of doing things I won’t do even in dreams.
