SARAMAGO

banqueros endiosados y directores jubilados

SARAMAGO

I raise my glass today to José Saramago,

a man who lived and wrote without doing any harm.

The master who gave us his last lesson

about how unfair this world is

when he died before stagnant politicians,

conceited bankers and retired directors.

They will die whenever they die and Don José, yet dead,

is still alive.

He who just wanted

to be one name among all names,

human to the bone,

captain of the defeated.

EKAITZ

EKAITZ

Marine sonata of the ferocious autumn,
a sulphide of foam boils on the harbour's rocks and algae.
The northern horizon, grey and blurred,
points the border of the bitter sorrow
after a new collision against the impossible.
Seagulls describe it with a gloomy symphony.
The rain that surprises those who walk at an ungodly hour
pours down like yeast that will ferment in the dough of time.

Alix is that alchemist

who's able of turning the blurred burnt silver foil

into shiny silver bromide.

That archeologist of the fragile, recent memory

who knew how to unearth poetry

from within the sordid misery and filth of deserted urban lots.

He' s such a human demigod

that he immortalized his dead friends

by freezing them in their highest and lowest moments.

That sly, altruistic card-sharp

who sells you an image

while he sneaks a thousand words into your pocket.

GOLOSINAS DE CASTILLA

Huele el aire del verano
a piruleta

CANDIES FROM CASTILLA

The air of summer smells
of lollypop
like the freshly washed girls who walk in their uniforms towards their state assisted schools.
(And in your ear of chocolate fondant time and even space melt).
I am walking, looking forward to reaching the bed of candy floss
where my exhausted bones of marzipan will find repose.
(I seek and cannot find the sweet jasmine scent from my childhood).
Just vapours of strong wine and smoked meat
when I pass by the cake where the bulls bleed to death.

OSLO IN SEPTEMBER

I saw you, sad and melancholic,

grey were your low spirits

like the sky of defeated summer

that always covers Oslo in September.

You were sure that ice would crack your humours

and that the certain snow would bury your hills.

Jump over your regret’s ski-jump

as those blond, fearless youngsters

who laugh at the frozen wind that shaves their cheeks do.

Land there where it smells of spices and essential oils.

Fly far away, turn away from Cartesian logics

and existential moors.

MUNDO VIEJUNO

OLD WORLD

I used to receive very funny emails. They were sent by anonymous genius from my generation who vindicated our childhood’s myths with wit and charm. This happened more than five years ago and now I don’t receive anything like it. Maybe nostalgia is not so funny anymore.
It is not funny now that life has bolted and given its reins to those who, a very little while ago, we called brats.
It is not funny now that we see them fighting those battles we once lost.
It is not funny now to see how life goes on and expels us from the locomotive to the caboose.
No, that is not funny at all, and sometimes makes everything else to seem pointless.

OLYMPIC MEDALS COLLECTION

There’s a girl you’re staring while she absent-mindedly smokes at the other end of the bar.
There’s no sign that she is aware of your presence in the room.
You should tell her that she’s right in taking no bloody notice of you,
because you have to your credit
international records of broken promises
and you keep at home
shelves full of fake trophies and medals.
Even so, now that she is looking at you at last,
you smile at her with your so well trained smile,
you gloat over the prospect of your victory.
You, the 100-metre flat race champion
who always pulls out from the marathon.
