THE WINTER BEACHES

Who said that winter beaches are sad? No, that’s not true, that’s rubbish. Who said that the rain over the sea is a pleonasm? No, no way, not at all. Who said that a shipwreck’s remains get the beach dirty? No, never: they entice you to think what storm brought them here and what stories drowned with them. What is sad, what is tiring, what dirties, are the summer’s human tides that bury the treasures that will be found in the winter: the murmur of the waves, the feeling of cold breeze in your ears, the wet sand, crunching under the feet of the one who fled from the parasols and is walking now, sheltered under an umbrella.

y me he sentido obscenamente rico.

FURNITURE CHANGE

At coffee breaks in the company this week

the crisis has been the top subject.

The crisis of toxic mortgages,

those poor little banks in need.

On the weekend we re-arranged our furniture,

and while sorting out the records confusion

I’ve realized I’ve got from Aphex Twin till Zener

and I’ve felt obscenely rich.

ECCENTRIC DISPLACEMENT’S URGENCY

We are perfectly entitled to run away if this society expels us,

if we do not reflect on it’s luxurious shop windows,

if it keeps for us the garlic and the cross of vampires,

weirdoes who do not buy, therefore do not exist.

We are perfectly entitled to run away if we feel cornered,

like animals wounded by bursts of commercials,

by the shrapnel of fabricated needs,

like rams immolated on consumer society’s altars.

We must run away, whether our flight be a leap in the dark or a race towards the ends,

towards anywhere but the rotten heart

where the system’s jaws await us, drooling.

KURSAAL

KURSAAL

As from yesterday I see it clear: the problem is that I am wrapped in a transparent crystal cube.
It protects me from the wind, but it steals me its scents.
It keeps me dry from the rain, but it mists over my sight.
So, I find myself damned: the sea speaks to me in silence, I catch glimpses of the skies but I cannot touch them.

¡Esos cuernos!

EXTREME UNCTION SOUNDS LIKE THE NAME OF A HEAVY METAL BAND

Extreme unction sounds like the name of a heavy metal band. That’s a concept which’s been around my mind for a while. If this is all there is to me (not this, whatever), may a long-haired priest come, a member of the missal hordes, and certify with sprinkler hits that there is no life left in this body.

Do the Devil horns sign!

THE CAGED EXPRESSION

Every time the lights go off and you make magic seem like child’s play, it comes to my mind that I always wanted to be one of you. Every time we leave the still darkened room, a swarm of mosquitoes flying towards the light that wipes them out, I blink and admit once more my caged expression. In the jet-black womb where dreams come ephemerally alive everything’s in order. It’s the halogenous light the one that blinds and confuses me.

LADY VENGANZA

LADY VENGEANCE

There’s a little Chinese girl in the bar who’s fascinated with the fruit machines’ lights. She’s two hunchbacked parents’ adopted daughter. Someday, this little Chinese girl will be young and beautiful, tall and slim as a reed. She will then promenade by the arms of their deformed parents, who will have already forgotten that she’s adopted and will see her as a victory of their genetic combination. Then they will pass by those who used to humiliate them back in school and they will look at them smiling, their sugary eyes oozing the sweet elixir of vengeance.

RAINS OF MAY

It’s been raining the whole month, so to speak, and I admired the skill of the girls who smoked under their umbrellas.
But this afternoon, Valencia’s light has come back to set the quarter’s bell towers on fire and to steal fragmented shines from the market domes’ mosaics.
And now, within me, the rainy clouds brought about by your seasonal absence are starting to bank up.
It will be like that until the early autumn storms soak again my lonely summers’ monotonous dryness.

ASPIRINAS Y LADRILLO

ASPIRINS AND BRICK

The bony girl maintains there is no stuff like Cristo’s. That the rest give you, if you’re lucky, a blend of aspirins and brick.
Without a family, without friends, without lazy Sundays in bed or paella on Sundays, without Christmas dinners or New Year’s Eves in the abyss.
The bony girl walks off down the road and her words blend with the tinkling of the bottles of wine into my shopping bag.

AMBICIONES COLMADAS

FULFILLED AMBITIONS

It’s incredible, how these men with ties get angry! How they tick people off on their triband phones! Either in the late evening or in the early morning, they yell angrily about negative balances, non-paid accounts, delayed collections, any possible swindle and aborted transfers, while they look at themselves out of the corner of their eyes on expensive stores’ windows. I pass them by and I look at them in surprise: Don’t money and fulfilled ambitions lead to happiness? Well, it’s incredible, what a temper these men with ties have! How slimy are them in their secretaries’ presence, though!

OJERAS

Quizá Kimberly Clark no esperaba vivir tanto.

BAGS UNDER THE EYES

On the bags under her eyes she has inscribed memories that won’t let her sleep. Her eyes refer to stories that only real women can shoulder. Her face has been modelled by the grin of the miscellaneous excesses, which always those who embraced life until they ran out of breath commit. Her mouth draws the grin of those who survive to their regret. She never smiles. Maybe Kimberly Clark didn’t expect to live that long.

We don’t want nice best-sellers, we want novels that hurt.
We don’t want distant stars, we want actors and actresses who remind us who we are.
We don’t want good-looking performers, we want songwriters whatever their looks are.
We don’t want commissioned art pieces, we want artists committed to surprise us.
We don’t want to hear the sermons’ sleeping voice, we want the verses that wake us up.
We don’t want to be changed by the world, we want to change ourselves so the world will change.

THREE OR FOUR THINGS I LIKE ABOUT YOU

I like when your naked body warms the bed up,

And one more thing:
the smile that lights your face up when you laugh heartily,
even at my crappy jokes.

Estados ogros, Estados Saturnos,

CONSPIRATORIAL THEORIES

The states are wardrobes full of corpses.
Their humid, rotten darkness gives birth to white mushrooms, ready to be carved by their bloody gums.
Ogre states, Saturn states,
in order to grow up you need to be watered with your children’s blood.
Martian states, with your history marked out by innocents’ sacrifices in the altars of war and consumer society.
God bless the Governments and have mercy on their children.

cegatos, medio sordos o renqueantes,

guardaos para vosotros vuestros parkinson, vuestros alzheimer,

vuestras gotas y lumbagos.

HEROES

We don’t want you old and worn out,
potbellied and alopecic,
living on faraway hits’ interests
like calves sucking from famished cows,
udders that don’t give any milk or give a sour one.
We don’t want you outdated and behind the times,
half blind, half deaf or limping,
keep to yourselves your Parkinson, your Alzheimer,
your gouts and lumbagos.
The only things we really want from you
are death-like snapshots and made up memories.
Spare us your decline’s obscene show
because it’s also ours.

GUADALAVIAR

GUADALAVIAR

Today I’ve come back to those places that memory’s set on deleting. Among the floor’s dirt I’ve picked up a dusty picture, eaten away by the woodworms of time and oblivion. We both were in it, frozen in a happy instant back in the days when the world was huge and fascinating to us, and life enraptured us with perfumes of mystery at every step. I miss those days like pages with nothing written and I long so much that it hurts for the frantic scribbles which we used to blot the night’s margins with. Nights whose happy ending we used to finish off at dawn, eating up the crumbs of those very bitter coloured joys.

Where an angry sea’s greenmurky beats
crash against Europe’s confines.
There I came with my spirits broken by the sleepless night
and by the siege of faceless insults between my ears.
We devoured oysters, Saracens and miles
to be between the sky and the sea suspended,
to promenade on the seabed
and to guess the cormorants’ secret techniques
in the wind that stole their squeals
and pushed the tide out to sea,
leaving them in return the present of their reflection
in mirrors festooned with seashells.

BRUMAS MATINALES

MORNING MIST

It’s been a while since the sun rose for everybody.
Its rays drove the night’s haze and the morning mist away.

The noise from the street awakes one or two ghosts.

The air is a thick soup of trembling molecules that buzz around my ears like flies that resist dying.

Some hours before I was another person but I was still myself.

Now I am entirely myself again and there is no trace of the other person.

I’ve been urinating him all along this weird morning.

The cistern barely silences the voices that are insulting me, reproaching me and sowing hesitation in me.

Am I myself or am I that other person?

My ghosts are ghouls of their perverse cohabitation.

ESCANDINAVIA #1

En Islandia no he estado.

SCANDINAVIA #1

From Norway I remember the long, lazy bus trips to the fjords, from the clear night to the bright day that starts in the early morning, through a never ending landscape. From Sweden I remember the snow and the smell of scorched rubber coming from the pendeltåg’s brakes. In Finland we stayed hardly 48 hours, too less time to be able to say anything sensible. In København it rained a lot and we had some weird herrings for breakfast, they were fried in breadcrumbs and then seasoned with a vinaigrette and chopped onion. I know that I am in Scandinavia when I smell the mixed scent of roasted sausages and cinnamon buns that pervades the press kiosks.
I’ve never been to Iceland.

MAL ALIENTO

BAD BREATH

One can nearly always forgive a burp.
Farts even may be funny in certain situations.
But if your mouth stinks to high heaven, that’s something inexcusable.
Armatage Shanks was taught to be what everyone always expects him to be.
That’s why he is such a pleasant, nice, kind boy.
But he knows himself very well and he knows he’s rotten inside,
and a sign of it is that bad, disgusting bad breath he has.
“How come nobody notices?”, he thinks whenever he shakes your hand while smiling.
